Book Review: Define Normal

Book Review
The book, "Define Normal," by Julie Anne Peters is a book about two girls who seem completely different, but actually have quiet a bit in common. Jasmine, better known as Jazz, is supposedly a punk, with a really soft center. On the other hand, Antonia is a "goodie-two-shoes," who always obeys rules, but secretly has a crazy life with her family. Her mom is clinically depressed and she has to take care of her two younger brothers. The girls start counseling one another, it starts out rough and Antonia gets frustrated, but in the end the girls become  great friends. After long weeks of counseling, Antonia discovers her mom has went somewhat crazy and Jazz and her family help Antonia get through it. Antonia also helps Jazz become more outgoing with her talents and talks her in to doing a piano concert. Jazz and Antonia realize that they have much more in common than they believe, they end up becoming very good friends.

I think one of the lessons in this book is don't judge a book by its cover. Jazz seems to be a punk, but she's just like any other girl. She has aspirations, likes playing instruments, and makes friends just like everyone else. Another lesson I think you can find in this book is that even when things go wrong, they will get better. One way I saw this in the book is when Antonia's mother goes slightly insane. Even though Antonia went through tough times, her mom eventually got better and everyone was happy. Plus, Antonia and Jazz both made a new friend.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who might know someone who seems sour. You never really know someone until you take the time to listen or talk to them. I'd also recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what the true meaning of "Don't judge a book by its cover," is. This book is more for people into not just adventure, but people who are willing to take the time to read books that have a message in them.

I think I can relate to this book. For me, life can be difficult sometimes. I'd say that if you have troubles, it's a great idea to find someone you trust, and tell them your troubles. Even if life is hard sometimes, it's nice to have a reliable person to let you air out your issues. I know some people that have the same issue as me, it's a very common thing. These sort of issues are nothing to be embarrassed about! Everyone has some sort of trouble every now and then. Now if you think you're having some of the same troubles, I would suggest visiting a trusted website that you could air your feelings out on.
