Far North, by Will Hobbs, is about a boy named Gabe who goes up north to a school in Yellowknife and meets a Dene boy who gets a little home-sick after leaving his town to go to school. He decides to head home and Gabe decides to come along for the ride. Clint (the pilot) decides to take a detour to see the Nahanni River, when their plane battery dies. They throw everything to shore, but forget one important thing. They try to save the plane, but they knew it was going to fall into the water. Clint ends up falling trying to save everything they left behind. Johnny Raven, Gabe, and Raymond end up getting stuck in the woods for the winter. Gabe and Raymond were lucky Johnny Raven was there to teach them how to survive. They end up running into bears and wolverines after Johnny Raven's death. The boys keep trying to get to the village and run into so many difficulties. Finally, after weeks of trying to survive winter, they reach Nahanni Butte and are finally safe.A few of the main themes in this book is never give up or lose hope, always keep going. An example of this theme is when they both think they're going to die but they try to keep going anyways. Another theme would be to always be prepared for the worst. One example of this theme is how Gabe tries to get across an ice bridge but the bridge ends up slowly breaking and Gabe falls. If Raymond wasn't there he wouldn't have lived. Another example would be that they knew they had to chop lots of wood for a fire before it got too cold outside. Those are just a few of many themes in this book.
I would definitely recommend this to other 7th graders, because it is very adventurous and I find it quiet thrilling. I think that anyone would enjoy this book. Sadly there is not a sequel, but I would suggest reading other Will Hobbs' books. I think that I would definetly recommend this book to anyone I know because it is exciting.
